At one point or another majority of us will all suffer from heartburn. After a big meal or a spicy curry that irritation starts growin and acid is being splashed up back into your esaphagus causing heartburn. Before I carry on heartburn mimicks a heart attack so if you have any of these symptoms get help immediately:
- Severe crushing chest pain
- Pain in your arms, jaw, back or neck
- Vomiting
- Shortness of breath
heart attack symtoms usually varie so if you are in doubt then seek help.
Many of us have been suffering from heartburn for a very long period, Causing us to alter our lifestyles dramatically living in fear, can I eat this or shall I avoid this, Its been going on for far too long and without any real solution most of us will be on some sort of medication to reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.
If you are reading this at this point I'm assuming you are all aware of the symtoms of hearburn but just to make sure these are the symptoms:
- The feeling of food being back up back in to your throat
- An acidic taste
- Chest pain behind or under your breastbone
- irritation in the throat
Personally I've tried avoiding medication but it gets so severe at times I find it hard to sleep so its easy to just pop a pill and suppress the heartburn for the time being. So now what?, many of you are thinking, well I've gone through many sites and articles trying to find a cure on acid reflux and there are many claiming to be the god sent cure, its just the patience of trying them and waiting for results. Then again, would you rather be on medication for the rest of your life ?
Its important to establish the root cause of your heartburn as there are many risk factors including obesity, smoking, spicy foods, lack of exercise etc. It is important to have a well balanced diet and even walking after a meal is a good way to aid digestion. Do not lie down 2/3 hours after having a meal as it will cause the stomach acid to go back up.Here are some remedies I have found to be quite useful.
So now what ?
I have searched various sites and articles and read quite a few testimonials, The most effective remedies I have found are listed below, There are many more that you can research on but I suggest trying these first.
Apple Cider Vinegar - A majority of people have claimed the A.C.V. helps to cure acid reflux by helping the stomach produce more acid to digest food quicker. This helps starve of heartburn as well as curing it. You should buy it in its natural form and take two teaspoons three times a day in 8ounces of water (1 Cup). There are also many other benefits to apple cider vinegar that has been reported but I will leave that for another article.
Herbal Tea - Avoid drinking teas that contain caffeine and look towards herbal teas. Teas that have peppermint is good as peppermint helps the digestion process as well as fighting of bloating stomach gas and flatulence. It also reported that it aids in repairing the stomach lining. Green tea has also shown to have effectiveness for preventing heartburn an aiding digestion but go towards herbal green tea as most shops tend to sell green tea with caffeine
Bananas - I would say this is my favourite remedy as I have used it and found it to be effective. Fruits high in fiber are good for your body overall, there has been research carried out and it is quite evident that it shows good results as well as preventing the cancer of the colon and esophagus, preventing heart desease and diabetes. Avoid the consumption of citrus fruits and juices as well as tomatoes as these are also triggers for heartburn. Bananas in particular I find are quite good for heartburn as it helps the stomach lininng produce thick mucus to protect against stomach acid as well the compounds found in Bananas called protease inhibitors help eliminate stomach bacteria which is the root cause of stomach ulcers. Ensure that you pick ripe bananas as bananas with hints of green on their peel are quite acidic and could cause heartburn ( I learnt the hard way :|)
These are a few mentioned there are great recipes out there for heartburn diets as well as many more herbal remedies. As I said earlier our bodies are different from each other and its just a matter of experimenting with your body to find what works for you. I would find it much simpler then to be stuck on medication that also carry many side effects.
If you experience any of the symptoms I have mentioned then please visit your doctor for a diagnoses and consult with him what to do further. This article is for education purposes only. If any of you have any suggestions or questions then please leave a comment, Also I would highly appreciate if you could comment on the way this article was written.
